Hair Loss – Medical Causes and What Really Helps

More Than Just a Cosmetic Concern

Hair loss can be deeply distressing. In my practice in Zürich Seefeld, I see patients – men and women – who are worried about thinning hair. The good news: in most cases, we can identify the cause and offer effective treatment. Hair loss is almost always a symptom of something going on inside the body.

Types of Hair Loss

Androgenetic alopecia: The most common type. Genetic sensitivity to DHT (a testosterone metabolite). In men: receding hairline and thinning at the crown. In women: diffuse thinning, especially along the part line.

Diffuse hair loss (telogen effluvium): Widespread thinning, often 2–3 months after a trigger: stress, illness, surgery, crash diets, iron deficiency, thyroid problems, or hormonal changes.

Alopecia areata: Autoimmune condition causing round, bald patches. Can affect any age.

Medical Causes We Investigate

Iron deficiency: One of the most common and treatable causes. Ferritin below 50 ng/ml can cause hair loss even without anemia. What we do: Complete iron panel.

Thyroid disorders: Both hypo- and hyperthyroidism cause hair loss. What we do: Full thyroid panel including antibodies.

Hormonal imbalances: PCOS, estrogen dominance, testosterone fluctuations, and menopause. What we do: Comprehensive hormone panel.

Vitamin D deficiency: Associated with hair loss and alopecia areata. What we do: 25-OH-vitamin D.

Zinc deficiency: Essential for hair follicle function. What we do: Whole blood zinc.

Stress and cortisol: Chronic stress pushes hair follicles into the resting phase. What we do: Cortisol assessment.

Treatment

Treating the underlying cause is always the priority. Additionally: targeted supplementation, PRP therapy (platelet-rich plasma) for hair regeneration, topical treatments when indicated, and nutritional optimization. In our practice, we also offer PRP therapy – an evidence-based approach that stimulates hair growth using your own platelets.
