High blood pressure: What really helps — medically and naturally

High blood pressure is one of the most common conditions in the Western world, but is often overlooked because it initially causes no symptoms. As a GP in Zurich, I see daily how important early diagnosis and individualised treatment are — not just with medication, but with a holistic approach.

The silent killer: Why high blood pressure is so dangerous

High blood pressure silently damages blood vessels, the heart, and the kidneys. Prolonged elevated blood pressure leads to heart attacks, strokes, and chronic kidney damage. The cunning part: many people notice nothing for a long time. This is why regular measurement and monitoring is essential.

Causes and risk factors

In my practice, I distinguish between primary high blood pressure (no identifiable cause) and secondary high blood pressure (caused by other conditions). The latter is often treatable by addressing the underlying disease. Typical triggers include overweight, lack of exercise, high-salt diet, stress, sleep deprivation, and hormonal disorders.

Lifestyle measures that really work

Before resorting to medication, I recommend proven lifestyle changes to my patients: regular endurance training (at least 150 minutes per week), weight reduction, DASH diet (rich in vegetables, whole grains, fish), salt reduction, and stress management. These measures can lower blood pressure by 10-15 mmHg.

Medical therapy and monitoring

When lifestyle measures are not sufficient, various medication classes are available. I recommend regular blood pressure monitoring — ideally with home blood pressure monitors — and regular check-ups at the practice. The health check-up also includes a thorough cardiovascular assessment.

The role of preventive medicine

My approach follows the principles of preventive medicine: early detection and intervention before complications. With targeted diagnostics, individualised monitoring, and preventive measures, we can effectively control high blood pressure and prevent serious consequences.

Individualised care in the GP practice

Every patient is different. That's why I work with my patients to develop a customised plan that takes into account their personal risks, circumstances, and goals. Regular care and open communication are the keys to success.
