Magnesium deficiency is widespread and often unrecognised. In my GP practice in Zurich, I see patients daily whose symptoms could be relieved by magnesium. The problem: standard blood tests often don't detect magnesium deficiency correctly.
Only 1% of body magnesium is in blood serum — the rest is stored in bones, cells, and muscles. A normal serum magnesium value does not mean that cells are adequately supplied. I therefore additionally measure intracellular magnesium (magnesium RBC).
Classic symptoms are muscle cramps, twitching, heart rhythm disturbances, headaches, anxiety disorders, sleep disturbances, and fatigue. These symptoms develop gradually and are often attributed to other causes.
Modern diet is often low in magnesium. Chronic stress, exercise, medication (especially diuretics and PPI), and gastrointestinal problems increase magnesium requirements. Diabetes, alcohol consumption, and age are other risk factors.
Green leafy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and fish are good magnesium sources. But many soils are low in magnesium, so plants absorb less. In my metabolic optimisation, I specifically recommend magnesium supplements with high bioavailability.
Not all magnesium supplements are equally effective. Magnesium glycinate and magnesium malate are better absorbed than magnesium oxide. I help my patients choose the best form for their situation.
With targeted supplementation and nutritional optimisation, sleep, muscle function, and even anxiety disorders improve significantly. Regular check-ups help me track magnesium status and adjust therapy.
