Sleep disorders: Medical causes and what really helps

Sleep disorders are not a simple symptom — they are often the result of underlying medical problems. In my practice, I find that many patients struggle unsuccessfully with sleep problems when the real cause has not been diagnosed.

Common medical causes

Thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency, magnesium deficiency, hormonal disorders, and chronic inflammation can all lead to sleep disorders. That's why I conduct systematic lab tests before prescribing sleeping tablets.

The cortisol paradox

Chronic stress leads to elevated cortisol in the evening — exactly when it should be low. The result: insomnia despite tiredness. I measure the cortisol rhythm to detect this and counter it with stress management and targeted measures.

Sleep and micronutrients

Magnesium, B vitamins, and vitamin D massively influence sleep quality. A deficiency leads to difficulty falling asleep and difficulty staying asleep. In functional medicine, I optimise these specifically.

Sleep hygiene and behaviour

In addition to medical causes, sleep hygiene measures are essential: fixed sleep routine, cool bedroom, blue light reduction in the evening, and no devices in bed. These simple measures often work wonders.

The right treatment approach

My approach: first thorough diagnostics, then lifestyle measures, then targeted supplements. Only if this is not enough do I consider medication. I avoid sleeping pills as first choice because they can be addictive and don't treat the real cause.

Long-term monitoring

Better sleep leads to better overall health. Regular check-ups help me track progress and adjust the plan. This is part of my holistic preventive medicine.
